I subscribed to this service when purchasing a new car for me. Pay the bill and the price of Consumer Reports does not match the distributor. I do not know if the dealers can edit the invoiced price, but it was also about what the consumer reports showed. The dealer incentive, however, was very close.

Ask to see the retailer in order to keep the invoice price of the vehicle, including the dealer. Ask the dealer if the price of what the law actually paid or, if they hid in brokerage fees as a right of the public.

In short, the answer to your question. No, you do not need the service if you know exactly what you want. However, I know of no better way to search the car without being in long and arduous negotiations with a supplier.
